Your phone photos are irreplaceable. Birthday parties, family pets, that one perfect skyline. I have rescued enough Toronto clients from “I dropped my phone in the toilet and lost everything” to know: auto-backup is not optional in 2026.
Here is what works free, what requires paid, and which to actually use.
What is the best free option for iPhone?
iCloud Photos. Built in, zero setup. But Apple gives you only 5GB free shared across iCloud Drive, iCloud Backup, Mail. A new iPhone fills that in two weeks of photos.
Realistically, you will need iCloud+. 50GB tier is $0.99/month USD, 200GB is $2.99/month. The Apple ecosystem integration (Photos app on Mac, full-quality everywhere) is worth it.
Free alternative: install Google Photos on iPhone. 15GB free shared with Google account. Set Google Photos to auto-upload your camera roll in the background.
What is the best free option for Android?
Google Photos obviously – it is preinstalled. Free 15GB tier shared across Drive/Gmail/Photos. Set “Backup & sync” on in Photos settings.
For more storage: Google One 100GB ($1.99/month), 200GB ($2.99/month), 2TB ($9.99/month). I run the 2TB plan because of my home server setup (Google Drive plus all the family photos).
What about OneDrive, Dropbox, and Amazon Photos?

How do I set up automatic backup?
iPhone iCloud: Settings, Photos, iCloud Photos on. Optimize iPhone Storage keeps full-res in cloud, small versions on device.
iPhone Google Photos: Install app, sign in with Google, tap profile, Photo settings, Back up & sync on.
Android Google Photos: Open Google Photos, profile picture, Photo settings, Backup, switch on. Pick “Original quality” or “Storage saver” (the latter compresses to 16MP).
Android OneDrive: Install app, sign in, Settings, Camera upload, on.
What about the privacy of cloud photos?
iCloud Photos has end-to-end encryption if you enable Advanced Data Protection (Settings, iCloud, Advanced Data Protection). Worth doing.
Google Photos is not E2E encrypted – Google can scan your photos for content (terms of service permit it). If privacy matters, use Cryptee or self-hosted Nextcloud.

Should I use multiple backup services?
Yes – belt and suspenders. I run Google Photos (primary), Amazon Photos (free with Prime, backup), and a monthly export to my home server. Three copies, three locations, zero stress.

What about RAW photos and ProRAW?
iPhone ProRAW and Pixel RAW files are 30-50MB each. Free tiers fill up fast. Google Photos handles RAW. iCloud handles iPhone ProRAW natively. Amazon Photos: yes, included in Prime unlimited photo storage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will auto-backup eat my mobile data?
By default no – all major services upload on WiFi only. You can change this but cellular upload of 4K photos burns data fast.
How long does initial backup take?
Several hours to days depending on library size. 10,000 photos at 5MB each = 50GB. On a 100 Mbps connection, ~70 minutes if no other traffic.
What if I delete a photo from my phone – does cloud delete too?
Usually yes (sync). Some services (Amazon, Dropbox) treat camera upload as one-way – deletes on phone do not affect cloud copies. Read each service’s policy.
Is Google Photos still free for original quality?
No – that ended in 2021. Pixel owners had the original quality free perk until 2020 too. Now everyone counts against the 15GB free quota.
Can I move from iCloud to Google Photos?
Yes – Apple has a transfer tool at privacy.apple.com. Choose Google Photos as destination, takes a few days.
