How do I diagnose what is making Word slow?
Open Word in Safe Mode first – holds Ctrl while double-clicking Word. If Safe Mode is fast and normal mode is slow, the problem is an add-in or your normal.dotm template. If both modes are slow, the install or hardware acceleration is suspect.
What is the order of fixes?
- Disable all add-ins. File, Options, Add-ins. At bottom, Manage: COM Add-ins, Go. Uncheck everything. Restart Word. Test. Re-enable one at a time to find the culprit. Acrobat, Grammarly, and Zotero are common offenders.
- Reset normal.dotm. This template loads with every Word startup. Corrupted normal.dotm = slow Word. Close Word. In File Explorer:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates. Rename Normal.dotm to Normal.old. Restart Word – it will create a fresh template. - Turn off hardware acceleration. File, Options, Advanced, Display section, check “Disable hardware graphics acceleration.” Restart Word. Counterintuitively, this often fixes slowness on Intel integrated graphics.
- Clear AutoCorrect bloat. File, Options, Proofing, AutoCorrect Options. If you have thousands of entries from years of accumulated typing, scroll through and delete weird ones. A bloated AutoCorrect file is a real performance hit.
- Disable Office telemetry/reporting. File, Options, Trust Center, Trust Center Settings, Privacy Options. Uncheck “Send Office to the cloud.”
- Repair Office install. Settings, Apps, Microsoft 365, Modify, Quick Repair (then Online Repair if Quick fails). Solves install corruption.
- Whitelist Office in your antivirus. Real-time scanning of .docx files on every save kills performance. Add the Office install folder to exclusions in Windows Security or your AV.
- Pause OneDrive sync if working on large files. The constant sync re-uploads on every keystroke can stutter the app.
What about Tracked Changes making documents slow?
Massive tracked changes history in a document slows scrolling and typing. Accept or reject all changes (Review tab, Accept All Changes), and disable Track Changes when you do not need it.
Embedded objects (Excel charts, screenshots embedded as objects) also bloat Word docs – convert images to PNG before inserting.
Should I use Word 2024 instead of Word 365?

Over 100MB or 500+ pages, Word starts to chug regardless of hardware. Split into multiple files linked by a master document. Or move to a real long-form tool like Scrivener.

What hardware actually matters for Word?
