Which free AI image generator should I try first?
Bing Image Creator, full stop. It runs DALL-E 3 (the same model behind paid ChatGPT Plus image generation), free, at bing.com/images/create. You get 15 “boosts” per day – boosts are fast generations. After boosts, generations slow down but stay free. No software install, sign in with a Microsoft account.
Quality is excellent for photorealistic and illustration prompts. Weaker for hands, anatomy, and complex compositions – DALL-E 3 is more conservative than Midjourney by design.
How does Leonardo AI compare?
Leonardo AI free tier gives 150 tokens daily, roughly 30-40 images depending on resolution. Their custom models (PhotoReal v3, Leonardo Diffusion XL) match or beat DALL-E 3 on character art and game assets. The web UI has prompt suggestions and a thriving community gallery.

Is Playground AI still free?
Yes – Playground AI free tier gives 50 generations per day with their Playground v3 model. The UI is the best of any free tool – inpainting, outpainting, image-to-image, all in one canvas. Quality is good, not great. Best for quick iteration.
What about running Stable Diffusion locally?
If you have a GPU with 12GB+ VRAM (RTX 3060 12GB, 4070, 4080), Stable Diffusion XL or the newer FLUX models running locally give you unlimited generations and total privacy. Install ComfyUI or AUTOMATIC1111 Web UI, download base models from Civitai, and you have an offline Midjourney.

What about copyright and commercial use?
Bing Image Creator allows personal and commercial use, but Microsoft does not indemnify you against third-party claims. Leonardo and Playground allow commercial use on free tiers with attribution recommended. Stable Diffusion images are public domain (you own them outright).
Always avoid prompting for living celebrities, copyrighted characters, or trademarks. That is where lawsuits come from.
What prompts work best for free tools?
Be specific. “A photo of a coffee cup” gets boring results. “Overhead photo of a steaming cappuccino on weathered wood, morning light, shallow depth of field, Fujifilm X-T5 35mm lens” gets a stock-photo-quality result.
